Microsoft Employees Disrupt Wii U Best Buy EventsRemember how Nintendo was showcasing some of their E3 games at participating Best Buy stores around the country? Well, apparently Microsoft employees have been hired to go to these events and preach about the Xbox One and make comments like "why would you buy a outdated Wii U when the Xbox One is right around the corner?"
However, the employees aren't getting what they hoped for. Most customers just start bashing the Xbox One in response. Seriously, Microsoft, the people attending these Best Buy Wii U events are people who are intimately familiar with the crap you pulled at E3. They ain't takin' your shit.
At first I thought this might just be a case of one really loyal Microsoft employee taking matters into his own hands (especially since the original source was /v/), but reports have come in from numerous Best Buy's around the country that indicate many Microsoft employees have ambushed the demo lines trying to persuade people to switch to the Xbox One.

Please Pants Responsibly (Paper Notebooks FTW)

There are two ways to write a novel. Plotting (you make an outline, a plan, a roadmap if you will, and then you sit down and write it) and pantsing (you write "by the seat of your pants, throwing caution to the wind). So when I get asked if I'm a plotter or a pantser, I'm all like er, uh, hold on, let me? Pantser? I think? But I kind of, um, do planny things?
And it gets kind of awkward because in these inarticulate moments I have managed to confuse everyone including myself. And probably spilled a drink.
In recent discussions, however, I've had a bit of a revelation, silly as it is. I've realized that I -- like many writers -- am a plotter/pantser hybrid. And perhaps what I'm doing is something we could call Pantsing Responsibly. And, maybe, just maybe, I could share some of my responsible pantsing tips with other writers. Starting with paper notebooks.

The Used Game ParadigmOver the course of this past generation I've been watching the video game market react to the way it's been forced to deal with increasing changes. I've come out against used game sales and even written a journal about boycotting GameStop because (like most people at the time) I believed they were the root cause of all the problems the video game industry has. But that's something I don't believe now as intently as i did then. From where I sit, piracy and used games sales are a problem, but not in the way game companies want us to believe that they are.
Used games are a good thing for consumers. We get to try games out, and if we don't like what we see or finish it early, we trade it in and try another title instead. It's a very good system for us since video game rentals are much harder to come by. SPIKE updatesJust thought I'd share with you guys some updates on the progress of finishing my "SPIKE" novel.

Anime North 2011 Report

Friday:

Got to the con at 10am.  The weather was dizzily and threatened full rain but was still able to shoot.  Did some great photo-shoots, and met some great people.  Best part of the day was spotting someone playing "the President" from Genshiken.  I was like "OMFG I have to take her picture" and when I got within 20 feet of her she yelled "TOM! can we do a photo shoot???' And I realized it was someone I knew and was hoping to run into.  I joined a photos scavenger hunt hosted by Jack and Pookie and completed it in 10 minutes, mostly with photos I had already taken that day.  Shot some video for the Savage Bandito show.  Overall an awesome and tiring day.  Got out around 11ish and got a decent amount of sleep.

Saturday:

Got to the con at 10 am.  Was presented with a wonderful Bandito-Pooklet by Jack and Pookie. Hit the ground running with some filming for Bandito. I was then barraged with photo-shoot requests...this was a stressfully wonderful thing.  I loved doing every one of the shoots, but it became a challenge to fit everyone, co-ordinate with everyone, and get it all shot.  All and all it turned out and on saturday alone I took more photos than any single con before.  Also managed to take part in day 2 of the scavenger hunt and won the event!  Got to see a lot of old friends and meet a lot of new people.  Meant to leave at 11 and get lots of sleep a friend had a minor medical issue and stayed (gladly) to help.  Got SOME sleep.

Sunday:

Had some family drama in the morning but managed to get out and to the con by 10:45.  Was too tired/humid for much Bandito filming, and since I got so much the previous day decided to focus on photo-shoots.  Got kinda hairy the same way Saturday did but managed to pull through and get a lot of great photos.

Overall a really great Anime North.  I got all that I wanted from it, was social, got video, got pictures, didn't overdo it...too much.

Another positive note is that with all the people going out of their way to get shoots from me I finally felt a little legitimacy as a photographer.  Thank you to everyone who did shoots with me...it was awesome!
